The wonder that is the Anglo Saxon legal system ...

There are almost 10,000 Muslims in Britain's jails— with 90 of them serving time for terror offences ... they fear more and more young lags are being converted and radicalised in prison. A ... source said: "You are talking about rootless young men at the bottom of society. They're in jail and someone gives them some purpose. "

In top-security jails such as Whitemoor, Cambs, 35 per cent of inmates are Muslim—and they have converted numerous other prisoners to Islam. (via MI5 spy chiefs are putting undercover officers into Britain's jails | News | News Of The World).

Slice and dice ...

Britain has an estimated 1.6 million Muslims - a 2.8% of the British population. Of this a 10,000 are in prison - which means about 0.6% of the British Muslim population is in prison. India has 16 crore Muslims - which a 100 times higher population.

What if ...

India were to follow the British policy of imprisonment, the Indian Muslim inside prisons would be in 10 lakhs (or 1 million). India's total prison population ranges between 2.5 lakhs to 3.5 lakhs.

Of course, Indian society handles crime vastly differently. Technically, India could create a legal system which would ease the ability of the police to imprison people - and hide its social problems. Or they could handle this differently - and humanely. Which is what is happening.

Is there an alternative ...

Combine this with a low police-to-population ratio and low crime rates. What you have then, is a modern Indian conundrum. This is not supposed to happen. But then, in India, there is a 4000 year of history which makes low prison population, low police to population ratio and a low crime rate possible.

The other question is this wonder called Anglo Saxon system of justice, jurisprudence et al.

These nasty figures raise a 'orrific stink, dont they, my boy?

Is the number of terrorists coming out fo Britain a problem or is it a symptom of the judicial system in Great Britain? And by extension in the rest of the Anglo Saxon world.

But then, in India, there is a 4000 year of history which makes low prison population, low police to population ratio and a low crime rate possible

Is that really true? Is the crime rate in India really that low?

Britain has an estimated 1.6 million Muslims - a 2.8% of the British population. Of this a 10,000 are in prison - which means about 0.6% of the British Muslim population is in prison. India has 16 crore Muslims - which a 100 times higher population.

Now here we are assuming that the British are following a wrong system of sentencing and a harsh system of imprisonment. I do not think so. It just happens that the present social fabric of the country is such that the muslims are a larger % of the prison population than they are in India. Think about the blacks in the USA. It doesn't follow that because there are muslims in both UK and India, the ratio indicates harsher laws and not more crime!

What was rather interesting was also the comments of the readers of the original column

shoot the lot of em, with the current financial climate we would save £££ssss

Anglo-Saxon justice indeed!
and

well remove the illegal immigrants from the prison population and then do a recount, i doubt there would be ten thousand after they removed the illegals

This is a problem in a small country. Percentages do not really tell us the actual picture here. Though India is also a perpetual sufferer of illegal immigration especially from Bangladesh and the immigrants are mostly muslims, the capacity of the larger country to absorb the mass in spite of it's own population woes is more because the quality of life of the poor is so bad that it only marginally worsens.....In the UK the illegals seriously deplete the quality of life of their "poor" folk. Also the expectations from life for the illegals in the UK are higher than it is for those illegals in India.
This probably profiles the reason for the higher crime amongst the muslims in Britain.
As far as India is concerned, I feel, what is needed is solid Police Reforms - and NOW. The judiciary - though moulded on the Anglo-Saxon mindset and ruleset is basically sound. It can be the stable bulwark around which the rest of the democratic institutions are modified. Once the rest is in place, judicial reforms can be brought in big time.

C.Buddha - You must see the history and the figures which are linked to these posts.

You will see that a poor society like India has comparable or lower crime figures - and lower prison population and police-to-population ratio. Western Crime theorists deem this as not possible. This data set is not duplicated in any other country in the world. There has to be some reason for this unique data set.

Arguing against hard, overwhelming, quantitative data is not such a fruitful exercize.
Take a 2ndlook. It is really interesting.

Let me assure you, criminologists across the world are cracking their heads on this one.
What they have missed out is the ability to imagine a 4000 year answer to the current crime scene in India.

checked out the links, had missed them....makes more sense now ;)
still have doubts about the extrapolation to Muslims in the UK for the reasons I mentioned in the almost last para in the last post......but you may be right to some extent.
